Scottish Album of the Year Award
3D animation, Concept Design, Art Direction | TV explainer sequence

Working with Inner Ear and Scottish Music Industry Associated we created a clean and contemporary 3D animation visualising the Scottish Album of the Year Award process, taking the viewer through on a visual journey from the call to entries to the winning album.

Through our art direction and modelling our aim was to highlight the variety of musical forms that contribute to the Scottish music scene, its contemporary, innovative nature and how accessible and inclusive the awards are for artists working in Scotland.

The animation style is gentle, slow and steady, highlighting the smoothness and professionalism of the awards and the team who produce them. Our lighting style was selected to emulate the live experience of music performance.

We created a matte environment lit with soft baby blue, neon pink and smokey white hues. Simple, iconic and symbolic forms identified the mechanics behind the awards process and detailed each stage of the process using wordless storytelling.

Finishes of figurative forms were made to contrast with the softer environment, using lux, high gloss, reflective, soft sheen metallic textures.

The final animation was shown on BBCiPlayer as part of The 2020 Award Winner’s Story broadcast.
