The Knight Map

Animation, Exhibition and Brand Design | Built Heritage Outreach Project

This project, created for Glasgow City Heritage Trust as part of the Gallus Glasgow heritage outreach brand, expanded upon the concept of increasing access to Glasgow’s historic built environment through digital and interactive design.

GCHT Commissioned artist Will Knight to create a contemporary version of the map of the city following the perspective and scale of Thomas Sulman’s Bird’s Eye View of the city created in 1864 and published in the London Illustrated News.

The project was comprised of an exhibition of works that illustrate Knight’s creative process, with each stage of drawing framed and displayed with explanatory text, a large format version of Knight’s line drawn inked map that exhibition visitors could draw and write on directly sharing ideas on Glasgow’s built places, green spaces, riversides and transport routes. An immersive presentation of an animated transition between The Knight Map and Sulman’s map, accompanied by a bespoke soundtrack inspired  by the two distinct time periods which was screened on a loop throughout the exhibition’s duration.

Gallus Glasgow’s narrative animation was displayed to provide context and situate Sulman’s map as the starting point of the brand and provide that project’s own exploration of Glasgow’s Victorian development. Alongside filmed documentation of the creative teams involved in bringing both projects to realisation, where they shared details on their roles, their experience and learning and their hopes for the work going forward.

As part of the project we created a software update to the Gallus Glasgow online interactive map where visitors can zoom in and out of and transition between the 1864 and 2022 maps, showing consistencies and changes across the city between the two periods of time.

We provided exhibition design, branding and graphic design for exhibition, 3D modelling and visualisation, graphic design, art direction, technical direction, project and installation strategy and delivery, point of sale design and event window display stand, creation of bespoke and immersive sound design, software development and live film interview documentary.
