Visualising the Science Behind Addiction Through 3D Animation

Darren McGarvey’s Addictions

Client: Tern TV
Broadcast on: BBC Scotland, iPlayer
Work Type: 3D Animation, Concept Design & Special Effects

For Darren McGarvey’s Addictions, SUUM Studio created high-impact 3D animations to visually decode the neuroscience of addiction. Through concept design, character modelling, and motion graphics, we brought complex biological processes to life, making them accessible to audiences.

Using Character Creator 4, we built realistic human forms, applying holographic textures to visualise brain activity. Our animated explainers broke down the chemical reactions, neurological responses, and hormonal triggers of addiction, layering 2D motion graphics and text overlays to highlight key insights.

The result was a visually striking, scientifically grounded animation package, smoothly integrating into the series' powerful storytelling. By combining cinematic visuals with clear, data-driven motion design, we helped Tern TV engage audiences with an educational and emotionally resonant exploration of addiction.

Darren McGarvey's Addictions won Factual Series at the BAFTA Awards Scotland ceremony on the 20th of November 2022.
