Mapping Glasgow’s Past & Present Through Immersive Design

The Knight Map

Client: Glasgow City Heritage Trust
Work Type:
Project Branding, Exhibition Design and Branding, Animation, Web and Sound Design

Transitional animation fading between The Knight Map 2022 and Sulman’s Bird’s Eye View of Glasgow 1864 alongside bespoke sound design by David Donaldson.

Commissioned by Glasgow City Heritage Trust, The Knight Map expands on the Gallus Glasgow heritage outreach project, using animation, exhibition design, and interactive technology to deepen public engagement with the city's historic built environment.

At the heart of the project is artist Will Knight’s contemporary map of Glasgow, drawn in the perspective and scale of Thomas Sulman’s 1864 Bird’s Eye View. SUUM Studio brought this vision to life through a multi-layered exhibition, featuring:

  • A large-format interactive version of The Knight Map, allowing visitors to draw, annotate, and share ideas on Glasgow’s urban spaces.

  • An immersive animated transition between Knight’s modern map and Sulman’s historic counterpart, accompanied by a bespoke soundtrack inspired by both time periods and the transition period between.

  • A digital update to the Gallus Glasgow online interactive map, enabling users to zoom, compare, and transition between Glasgow’s 1864 and 2022 landscapes.

  • A behind-the-scenes documentary featuring the creative teams behind both projects, sharing insights on research, design, and historical interpretation.

SUUM Studio delivered a comprehensive design and production package, including exhibition branding, 3D visualisation, motion design, graphic design, immersive sound design, technical direction, software development, and live event documentation. The project integrates art, technology, and storytelling, ensuring Glasgow’s evolving architectural narrative remains accessible and engaging for future generations.
